Kashmir, month by month: when to actually go
Tulips in April, meadows in July, powder in January. A practical guide to picking your window in the valley — and what each one costs you.
Most people book Kashmir for a date that suits their calendar and then hope for the best. The valley rewards the opposite approach: pick the experience first, then let the month follow.
April and May are the softest introduction. Almond blossom gives way to the Srinagar tulip garden, the days sit in the high teens, and the mountain passes above Sonamarg are still snow-lined without being closed. This is also the busiest photography window, so houseboats book out early.
July and August are green and family-friendly. Pahalgam's side valleys are at their best, water in the Lidder runs high, and Gulmarg's meadow is a genuine picnic destination. Rain shows up in short evening bursts.
December through February belongs to snow travellers. Gulmarg's upper bowl gets serious powder and the gondola becomes weather-dependent. Build a buffer day into any winter itinerary — plans change with the forecast, and that is part of the deal.
