Eating through Kerala without a restaurant list
Toddy shops, estate kitchens and the case for letting your houseboat chef decide. How we plan food-led days in the south.
The best meal on a Kerala trip is rarely in a restaurant. It is a sadya at a family home in Kumarakom, a toddy shop lunch outside Alleppey, or a plate of karimeen cooked forty minutes after it left the water.
We build one anchor meal into each leg and leave the rest open. In Fort Kochi that might be a breakfast walk. In Munnar it is usually an estate kitchen lunch where the menu is decided by whatever is in season.
On the houseboat, let the crew shop. They stop at a village jetty in the afternoon, buy what looks good, and cook it two hours later. No menu we could print would beat it.
